Seaweed Paper: A Circular Solution for Sustainable Packaging

Transforming Seaweed Byproducts into Eco-Friendly Paper

Renowned sustainable packaging brand Notpla uses leftover seaweed from its own production process to create paper that can be made into envelopes and boxes.

The brand wanted to find uses for the seaweed left over from the production process “to make sure there is no waste” – Notpla says that using one ton of seaweed by-products can save up to four tons of trees from being cut down, and from a zero-waste, circular mindset, their goal is to minimize the need for virgin materials as much as possible.

seaweed paper, with its speckled and neutral-toned appearance, can be used to package products such as hand sanitizers and toothbrushes, as well as on wine bottles to create boxes, envelopes, and labels.

Key Features of Seaweed Paper

  • Composition: 30% seaweed byproducts, 70% recycled materials, with less than 5% virgin wood pulp (targeting 0% by 2026).

  • End-of-Life Options: Home compostable within 4-6 weeks or fully recyclable.

  • Carbon Savings: 68% lower carbon footprint compared to conventional paper.

  • Applications: Perfect for envelopes, product boxes, bottle labels, and cosmetic packaging.

A Circular Economy Innovation in Action

This paper represents a prime example of circular economy principles at work. The seaweed extraction process—originally developed for edible packaging—now generates byproducts that are repurposed into paper products. This closed-loop system ensures 98% material utilization from farm to final product, optimizing resource use and reducing waste.

Environmental Benefits and Sustainability Impact

The seaweed paper offers several key environmental benefits:

  • Saves Trees: By using seaweed byproducts, this paper reduces the need for virgin wood pulp, helping conserve forests and promote sustainable forestry practices.

  • Carbon Emissions Reduction: With a 68% lower carbon footprint, this material helps businesses achieve their sustainability goals while reducing overall environmental impact.

  • Compostable and Recyclable: Fully home compostable in 4-6 weeks, offering an eco-friendly disposal option, and can be recycled with other paper products.

Industry Recognition and Adoption

The seaweed paper has garnered attention from both the sustainability and luxury industries. Its unique speckled texture and neutral tones have made it a popular choice for premium packaging solutions, particularly in the cosmetics and spirits sectors.

  • Featured in: CMF Trend LAB 2025 (Guangzhou), FRAME, Elle Decoration.

  • Popular with: Brands seeking luxury packaging that aligns with their sustainability commitments.

Roadmap for Future Development

There’s a clear plan for expanding the use of seaweed-based paper in the coming years:

  • Q3 2025: Launch of pilot production for a 100% wood-free variant of the paper.

  • 2026: Full-scale industrial production capacity.

  • Ongoing R&D: Continuous improvement of tensile strength and performance for broader applications across various industries.
